Summer has Arrived!
Welcome to Such Savvy Style

Dear Carrie,
Time really does just fly by!  I really can’t believe we are already at the beginning of summer.  I have been busy shopping, making spring and summer outfits, and creating new make-up looks for many of you.  I also took a great trip to AZ for my annual image conference which I will share with you below.  And if you are you a Project Runway Fan I have some information on that below as well.  To keep up with all the Such Savvy Style happenings if you are not yet a Facebook friend please click below.

 Carrie’s Packing Tips!

What a full load!

OK, so I recently took a business trip to Arizona for my annual AICI (Association of Image Consultants International) conference.  Now you really can’t imagine trying to pack for a week when you know you are going to be around some of the top fashionistas in the world.  Honestly, it’s like a fashion show every day!  One of the services I offer is helping people pack for trips.  My clients love this service because I help make sure that everything fits in one suitcase and everything you pack works together (called a capsule) so you have plenty of great outfits.  SOOO, packing for this trip should have been easy breezy for me.  It was not!  When I weighed my bag it was 62 lbs.  Yikes, I knew I had to remove a couple pair of the 10 pairs of shoes I had packed!  I share with you now some tips for packing for your up coming summer vacations so you don’t make the mistakes I made.  I should have known better!

Circle of shoes
3 image consultants, 6 days = 20 pair of shoes!

1.   Purchase light weight luggage.  This will save you some weight right off the bat.  Briggs and Riley and Travel Pro both are top rated for quality and light in weight.  I personally think Travel Pro is great.

2.  Make a plan.  Think through what you are doing on your trip.  Are you going to nice dinners, lots of touring and walking, a wedding, or just taking a beach vacay??  Having an idea of what you are doing both day and night is key.

3.  Check the weather!  Just because it’s 100 and hot in CA where you live does not mean that it will be the same on your Alaska cruise.  Sometimes making this mental switch is hard.

4.  Create a capsule.  Choose colors that are all in harmony with each other.  By creating a capsule of clothing that all works together you will be able to create lots of interesting fun outfits with very little clothing.  I recently did a presentation where I showed how I could make 30 outfits with 10 items of clothing.

5.  Take pictures of outfits.  I suggest you build outfits before you pack them.  Lay out everything you want to take following the above rules and then play around with things to see what works together.  Think outside the box – you may be shocked at some of the cute things you can come up with.  If you have an odd man out, meaning it stands alone and goes with nothing you are packing, you may want to leave it home for this vacation, or slip it in at the end if you are under 50 lbs!!  Remember, you want everything to work together.  If it helps, take pictures so you remember the outfits and don’t have to think about it in your hotel room. There is a great app called "CLOTH" where you can do just this and even categorize outfits for events or vacations.

6.  My biggest challenge, SHOES!  OK guys, I am obsessed with shoes.  I love them.  I want to take them ALL with me.  BUT, since we know this isn’t possible, what is best to take?   I always recommend taking something in metallic color.  They will give any outfit a little pizzazz but the metallic colors also go with EVERYTHING!  Make sure you TEST DRIVE your shoes before taking them on a trip.  You don’t want to have a brand new pair of cute shoes giving you blisters because they are not broken in.  Try to limit your shoes to 3 pairs and maybe a slim pair of flip flops.  Clearly, the 8 pair of shoes I took to AZ were a bit of a problem!

7.  Accessories.  This is where you can go crazy!  Accessories make outfits fun and interesting.  Plus, they are light and easy to pack.  As we have talked about before, just changing accessories on an outfit can make it look completely new and different.  For example, if you are taking a sun dress you can make it fun for the sight seeing or shopping, and completely transform it for night with a jacket and totally different accessories and shoes.

Now, it’s time to put everything in the suitcase.  There are many ways to do this but picking some kind of system will be the most helpful.  If you are worried about the weight of your bag you may want to consider purchasing a handheld luggage scale that you can find at many travel stores or even the Container Store.  If you feel a little overwhelmed packing for you next trip I would love to help.

What is on my list for Spring??

Emerald Green

As you look over some of the spring trends you might be thinking that some things are a little "out there"!  So just what is on my shopping list that can fit into almost everyone’s closet? And what will not be out of season by next spring?

I love leather!  There are really a lot of soft, light weight leathers out there in jackets, tops and pants.  Choose a color that is a spring neutral or one of your best colors so you can wear this item year after year.

Another thing that I love this spring is all the prints — prints on pants and tops.  Be mindful about the size of the print.  Don’t get lost under large prints if you are petite, and if your frame is larger you’ll want to pick a print that is a little larger.  I don’t think you can go wrong with stripes.  They tend to be timeless.  Just remember all the rules about stripes!!!  Please don’t place large stripes over an area where you carry a lot of volume.

What about the cutout clothing trend!?!  I call this peek-a-boo clothing!  I think there are fun ways to incorporate this trend into your closet even if you don’t have a peek-a-boo clothing body.  BUT….please hear me on this…NO cutouts in ANY problem areas.  Maybe find a cool cutout handbag, scarf or cool pair of shoes.  I have a cool skirt that has cutouts but it has a underlining so it looks classy.  This trend very quickly looks cheap if it’s not done correctly.  I don’t see this trend sticking around for a long time so I would not invest a ton of money but a piece or two could be fun for the wardrobe.

The color of the season is emerald green.  Various shades of green are all over the stores .  This is great news because everyone can wear some shade of green; that’s  because green has warm shades, neutral shades and cool shades.  (Red is the only other color on the color wheel that has all three.)  Shades of green also go with so many other colors so mixing and matching items in your closet will be fun.   For example, green and yellow, and green and navy are great combinations.  Green is also a fun spring color to add a pop of interest to your more neutral colored outfits.

So what would I avoid this season?  There are some really cute shorts that are out there but I also have seen some that will make you look like you are wearing a trash bag around your waist.  I would avoid the bermuda shorts  with a lot of volume and large print.  Even writing about it gives me the shakes!  I would also stay clear of certain colors if they are not your best.  For example yellow, it’s a really fun color on trend but there are not a lot of people who look good in yellow.  I would add it as an accent or accessory color, or in a pair of pants but avoid solid yellow around your face.

If you still have questions navigating all of these spring and summer fashions I wold love to help.   Give me a call to book your appointment today.

2013 Happy New Year!
Welcome to Such Savvy Style

Greetings!
Happy New Year!!  Can you believe that the holidays are over and we are back to day-to-day life?!?  Well this month I would like to help you start your new year off on the right foot.  Let’s talk about getting that closet organized!

Like me on Facebook
 Happy Closet, Happy Life!

closet in harmony

Clearing space and getting organized is one of those top ten New Year’s resolutions that is often pushed aside by February. Why aren’t we successful at attaining this goal? Let’s admit cleaning the closet is really not that fun!

Step One: Think about what you’re holding on to.

Most often closets are filled with items that served us well in the past but may need to be re-evaluated with our current lifestyle. Clothes from another job, marriage or decade can’t be expected to serve us the same way they used to! You’re not the same person you were a year, three years or five years ago. Imagine a closet filled with just the clothes that suit you and your lifestyle right now.

Closets can be placeholders for clothes that no longer fit our bodies, our personalities or lifestyles. They can also become a dumping ground for random "stuff" that we think we have no other place for.  Imagine opening your closet to only clothing and shoes, and everything in there fits you right now. Accept yourself as you are. Once you do that, it makes it easier to get rid of clothes that don’t fit and flatter your body.

Many people hang on to things out of a sense of duty or obligation. For example, someone gave you a gift and although the thought was really great it may not be suitable for you; or sister still insists on giving you her hand-me-downs even though your lifestyles are completely different. Maybe there are things you purchased yourself that were never right and you never wore them. It happens to everyone! But a new year is a great time to realize that it’s okay to be surrounded by things in your closet that you love and to let other things go. Imagine living in 2013 with a closet full of clothes you love.

Step Two: Once you have a clear vision it’s time to take action.

Now that you’re clear about what you need in your closet, it’s time to tackle the clutter that’s taking up physical and emotional space in your closet. Remember, your new criteria is to have clothes in your closet that you love, that fit and flatter you, that feel like they fit into your lifestyle, and that you could wear next week if you wanted to. Everything else is going to find a home somewhere else!!

Schedule yourself time. If you can’t take a Saturday or a weekend to de-clutter, give yourself a few mornings or evenings to complete this project over the course of a few short weeks. Tackle areas one-by-one, including:

  • Coat closets
  • Shoe storage areas
  • Jewelry boxes, hooks, or drawers
  • Your main closet in sections (pants, tops, jackets, dresses, etc.)
  • Drawers of sweaters
  • Drawers of exercise clothing
  • Any additional closets

You can cut the workload by half if you concentrate on one season only. If you’re not going to wear something for four to six months, store those items out of sight or in an extra closet away from your main closet for the time being.

Remove retired items from your home as quickly as possible. Pack them in large trash bags or boxes and plan to donate your items as soon as you can. Some charity groups even provide pickup.  If there are items you are unsure about make a pile and I can help you quickly go through it and decide what items should be kept and made into new outfits or discarded.  You could be amazed at what I can salvage and make fresh and new plus save you a lot of money!

I went through my closet last week and now every time I open it I love everything that is staring back at me!  Although this may not be your favorite activity it will be worth it.  However, if all of this seems overwhelming support is just a phone call away. I’m here to help you clarify, sort, organize and arrange your closet so it can better serve you in 2013. Let’s make YOU and your space a priority!

How do I camouflage my tummy?

One issue that many women complain about is a little tummy.  No matter how hard we try to make it flat it just won’t go away!  Here are a few tricks which use your clothing to hide your problem area.
Color block dress

1.  The trend of color blocking can actually hide the tummy.  Look for a dress that is lighter in areas you want to show off and a darker color block over the tummy area.

2.  Add a busy print or pattern.  The busyness of the print causes the eye to be confused and not focus on that area.

3.  For many of you a shirt with a peplum will draw attention to your waist and the peplum glides over the top of the tummy.

4.  A-line tops will create a looser fit across the tummy. However, be careful if you have larger breasts as an A-line will cover your tummy but could also make you appear pregnant.

5.  Any top with ruching or vertical design elements is a great way to cover the tummy or the "love handles".

6.  By creating layering with a partially buttoned semi fitted jacket or a cardigan, you are showing off your silhouette and concealing both your tummy and "love handles".

And of course don’t forget one of the most important items in your closet that will help slim your lumps and bumps…your shapewear!

J.Hilburn Logo

This year I came across a line of high quality Men’s clothing.  I decided to start selling J. Hilburn as a way to service male clients without them having to go to the store and shop.  We all know how much men love to shop!!!   This company provides custom shirts, and semi custom suits and trousers.  They also sell many off the rack items such as jeans, coats, and sweaters.  How excited would  your husband or partner be if they never had to shop in a mall again.  I just show up and we do all the shopping from your home or office.

Men HATE Shopping!

J.Hilburn Logo

If your husband is like most men, he most likely really doesn’t like shopping with you but dislikes shopping for himself even more!  Because of this, I have decided to offer a new service for my male clients.  I will bring the shopping to them!

I recently became a partner with J.Hilburn, a luxury men’s clothier.  They offer 100% custom dress shirts, made to measure trousers and personalized suiting.  Not to mention an entire collection of ready to wear off the rack clothing…Even AG jeans!  The best part is that you are getting high-end quality clothing at less expensive prices with beautiful fabrics and great style.

Of course I will still always go shopping with anyone who wants to shop, but now there is an option for those men who don’t want to!

Carrie’s Fall Favs
NYDJ Animal Print Nordstrom

This fall there are a lot of things in the stores I am not really a fan of.  In fact, I haven’t enjoyed shopping for myself as much as usual because the trends are not as much my style. So many tops and jackets are big and boxy and you all know how I feel about that! However, don’t let me fool you!  I have still found plenty of things I like.

I am a huge fan of the pantsuit (jumpsuits).  Sometimes they can be hard to fit but if you find the right one it can be flattering because it works like a column, creating a strong vertical line.  As we all know, verticals are great for making us look taller and skinnier!

I also love all the pants with prints and colors on them.  This is definitely a trend and one that most likely won’t last too many seasons but it is fun.  Talk about adding interest to an outfit!  I personally like the jeans with animal prints best.  If the print is small it creates a distraction and can make legs look slimmer.   Be careful with these pants…many of the colored jeans are great but some of them, depending on color and fabric, can make your legs look bigger than they are.    Go for a darker color and a thicker fabric or a cord.

Because I am such a girly-girl I am loving the lace tops with the peplum waists.  Tops, jackets and dresses with peplums are definitely a trend so I would not spend a lot of money on them.  There are a few pros and cons.  For example, for someone who doesn’t have a defined waistline a peplum can create a wonderful illusion of a very defined waistline.   Someone that may want to avoid this trend is someone with longer legs.  It creates a very strong horizontal line at the hip line which will make the legs look even longer and make you look extremely out of proportion.

Welcome to Such Savvy Style

Dear Carrie,
Wow, life has been busy!  I hope all of you are enjoying Summer.  If you are getting ready for a vacation I have an article for you about packing all the right items for your trip. And, believe it or not, Fall clothing is starting to arrive in the stores this week.  Nordstrom’s Fall  Anniversary Pre-Sale started this week.  If you are a little overwhelmed with the idea of shopping for fall clothing while it feels like an inferno outside don’t, worry I can help!

You can pack in one bag!

Suitcase

1.  Avoid taking any delicate or pricey fabrics.   The last thing you want to worry about is snagging your favorite expensive top.  Instead pack fabrics like microfiber, denim, polyester blends, tropical wools, or sturdy knits.

2.  Really think carefully before packing white.  White can get very dirty, very quickly, so unless you need it for a white party, you are planning to wear it only once, or you will have easy access to laundry, you may want to leave it at home.  Packing tops that have prints or texture will camouflage small spills or a little bit of dirt.

3.  Make sure that all the shoes you pack have been broken in.  The last thing you want to do is go buy new "comfy" shoes for your trip and end up with blisters.  Invest in good quality shoes (yes, they do make both cute and comfy) and wear them before your trip.  I would take about three pairs of shoes.  Your feet will need a break from wearing the same pair daily.  AND…we don’t want you to go into shoe withdrawal!

4.  Pack clothing that fits you but is not too snug.  Most of us like to partake in yummy food while vacationing.  If your clothes start out snug imagine what they will feel like at the end of your vacation.

5.  Think about taking a capsule of clothing.  These are a group of items that can be mixed and matched into multiple outfits.  I would also take a dress, one that can be dressed up or dressed down with accessories and shoes.  A dress is also good for warmer days and if it gets cool you can add a little sweater or jean jacket.  Another must have is a rain resistant light jacket.  Keep it in a neutral color and in a fabric that won’t wrinkle.  Bring one outfit just in case the weather takes a turn from the weather you are expecting.

6.  Finally, avoid packing boring items.  Remember, you will be taking pictures and although you may not roll out your best items, you do want to feel good and look cute.  PLUS, you don’t want to open your suitcase and feel depressed about the blah clothing staring back at you.  Bring inexpensive accessories, prints, textures, or bright colors. Try and have at least one fun element in every outfit!

Don’t stress, if you need help just call!  I promise not only will you look fabulous but it will fit in one bag and be less then 50 lbs.

Introducing the Hipsi Belt!

If you are a women who likes to wear a belt to hold your pants up then I have found the belt for you!  It’s called the Hipsi.  Women with smaller hips or tooshies often have a hard time keeping their pants in place.  Often times you start the day with proper fitting pants and within a few hours your pants are sagging and you have what I call droopy drawers!

The Hipsi is an elastic belt that has a complete flat front.  So, there is no bulge under your pants and you can even wear it with pants that have no belt loops!  It is also fully adjustable from the inside making it easy to use no matter where the pants sit.

This belt also covers the button bulge on jeans and it protects t-shirts from wear and tear from your jeans button.  It comes in three colors, black, brown and champagne and has lots of cute pattern belt buckles if you decide you want them to show.

For you ladies who are afraid to wear lower waisted pants this may be an option to help keep them up!

You can order them online at:  www.hipsiworld.com

 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

Welcome to Such Savvy Style

Greetings!
Spring is here!  This is my favorite time of the year.  Sunshine, warm weather and spring clothes.  With that said, this seasons fashions are a bit out there!  In this newsletter I hope to provide some advice on the crazy trends as well as some swim suit shopping guidance.

Swim suit shopping can be fun!

Athleta
Athleta
Miraclesuit

So many women dread the trip to shop for a swim suit.  Don’t let this be you…I can help!  Every spring I help women shop for the perfect bathing suit and it can actually be fun.  There are so many suits out there it’s just finding the best one for you and your body.

There are some great companies that make really cute swimwear for all different body shapes.  One is Athleta.  It is a women’s active wear company and they have a good selection of bathing suits that are both cute and practical.  Although they only have 11 stores in the U.S. they have a great catalog and online business.  Title Nine also has a nice selection of swimwear.  If you are a person who wants to go into a store and try on, as opposed to ordering online, I think the store that has the best overall selection of suits is Macy’s.

Here are a few pointers when trying on a suit if you are shopping alone.

1.  If you have a tummy or are plus size you might want to try on The Miraclesuit.  This company is known for making suits that will make you look 10 lbs. slimmer in an instant!  It actually works pretty well.  Over the last few years they have actually come out with some really cute and trendy little suits.   You can also look for suits that use detailing or color to create the illusion of a small waist and a flatter tummy.

2.  If you don’t like the idea of a two piece because of your body shape but feel a little fuddy duddy in a one piece then try a tankini.  This is a great in-between option because ladies let’s be real….not many of us should be wearing a bikini!  They just don’t look good with any lumps, bumps or rolls showing.  Try a tankini instead–it can still be fun but a little more flattering for most.

3.  Shopping for swimwear can be a challenge if you have either a large chest or a small chest.  There is nothing worse than popping out of your suit (trust me I know!!!) when taking a dive or having your suit slide around because you don’t have enough to fill it out!  If you have a large chest I recommend finding a suit that has underwire.  This will not only give you support but it will also give you a little lift.  Aim for halter tops or suits with thicker straps.  Try and avoid thin straps as they will make your upper half appear larger.  If you are smaller, thinner straps will be better.  Try and find a suit that has detailing, a pattern, or ruffles.  This will give you added volume.  I would also recommend a suit with a little padding in the cup that molds around your breast.  This will help keep everything in place.

4.  For those of you who feel you have a challenge in your legs, tooshie, hips or thighs avoid a hemline bisecting through the area that isn’t your best.  Chances are you will not look your best in boy shorts or low cut bottoms.   In my opinion, most people who have lower half challenges will look best in a full scoop bottom.  The key here is to draw attention away from that area.  A suit with some interesting detailing on top will draw the eye away from the problem area.

I hope these tips help.  Remember, color can play a lot into how a suit looks on you too.  Dark colors recede, meaning they hide or make things look smaller, and light colors advance, meaning they show and make things look bigger.  Don’t stress and struggle with your swim suit purchase…book an appointment with me and let me help you find your best suit!

Crazy Color, frumpy styles, what do I do?
If you are frustrated with this spring’s fashion, join the club!  It is not easy shopping out there right now.  Some of the styles make even the mannequins look larger than they are…take a look! So the key is finding styles that are flattering for your shape.  The biggest problem I see are tops with wide sleeves and no waist.  This look is not flattering for most of us and creates a boxy, wide look.  I would avoid these and look for tops that have a silhouettes that skims your shape.

The colors, although fun, can feel a bit overwhelming if you are looking for something not so dramatic.   Personally I am having a bit of fun wearing some of the fun colors on the bottom in little capri pants or jeans.  Mixing strong colors is really popular right now, but if you are uncomfortable doing this think about doing a milder version.  For example, yesterday I wore a cute pair of pink colored jeans with a print top (pink, purple and turquoise) and a turquoise sweater.  I still feel it’s important for all the colors to repeat at least twice in the outfit although many of the mannequin displays may not show this.  Happy shopping… let me know if you need help!

  Shop Like a Pro!

Do you get overwhelmed when you walk into a mall or large department store?  If so, please don’t feel alone.  I have many clients who feel this same exact way.  It can be overwhelming when everything staring back at you is rack upon rack of endless clothing.  Where do you even begin?  Well I am here to help with a few shopping tips that may help keep you focused.

1.  Go prepared with a shopping list.  Have an idea of what items your closet needs for the up-coming season.  If you are shopping for a specific item keep that item in mind.

2.  Pull yourself together!  What do I mean by that?  There really is nothing worse than going to shop for a fun new item, trying it on and immediately feeling dumpy.   Not because of the new item, but because you did not take the time to pull yourself together before you ran out the door.  No one is going to look or feel good in new clothes with their hair a mess and no make-up.  Take a few minutes to make your self look cute.  This includes wearing appropriate undergarments for trying on new clothes.

3.  When you walk into the store know your best colors.  If you eliminate all the colors that are not your best this will help you narrow down the overwhelming amount of clothing on all the racks.  For example, if I am looking for a blazer, I know that my best blazer colors for spring will be a beige/khaki color for a neutral, or if I wanted to do something in a color I might look for a coral color.  Tangerine is hot right now, but it’s not a good color for me, whereas coral, its cousin, is a great color for me.  Now I have eliminated other possibilities that look cute on the rack but not on me.

4.  The same rule applies for the shape of a garment.  Look for silhouettes that are your best and don’t even look at ones that are not flattering to your shape.  Because I’m curvy and tend to be a little bigger top, I know tops with tons of detailing or frill at the bust line will NOT be flattering on me.  As cute as they may be, I try my hardest to just avoid them.

5.  Remember to buy clothing that will flow with everything else in your closet.  It can be very, very tempting to buy an item because it’s "so cute", it’s the new trendy thing, or it’s on sale.  Please do not do this.  You will have a closet full of what I call "one hit wonders".  They will sit in your closet unworn because you have nothing else that will go with them.

6.  Buy both a mixture of basic items and unique pieces.  This will be great for layering and creating interest.

7.  Go prepared with a budget in mind.  This will help you stay focused so you don’t go home and feel guilty.  You should be going home and celebrating all your fun, new fabulous items and not worrying about paying for them.

If you still feel overwhelmed call me and let’s have fun shopping!

Welcome to Such Savvy Style

Dear Carrie,
Can you believe that department stores are already dressed up for the holidays?  I walked into Macy’s the day after Halloween to Santa Baby blasting.  As much as I shop, I am not ready for Santa Baby yet!!  However, I am ready for all the fun party clothing.

 Hot Holiday Looks

Green SequinsFur caplet

The time has arrived to start thinking all your holiday parties and functions.  With that comes the possible stress of what to wear.  Well, let’s chat about what is hot right now and then we will discuss some fun options.

This season it’s all about fur and sequins.  If it has fur and or sequins you can’t go wrong.  You can’t even walk into a store without seeing, fur, sequins, glitter, and velvet all over the place.  Mixed within all that fur are bold and bright colors.  Say goodbye to the LBD (little black dress) this holiday season and hello to color and pizzazz!  Here are a few tips for picking the perfect holiday look.

1.  Make sure your outfit, either dressy or casual, has a little something extra.  Think black velvet pants, a bright colored sequined top with a fur caplet.  If you are going with a more casual look you could pair chic jeans with a fun but simple top and add a fur and velvet scarf.  What if your event is formal?  There are so many beautiful dresses out there so pick something that flatters your shape first and foremost.  Then go with a bold color that is your best.  Lastly, think of the trends to add the pizzazz.

2.  Pick accessories based on your outfit.  The most important thing is that you wear some!  Remember, they are like the icing on the cake.  A cake tastes and looks bland without it.  Your outfit will be the same way, bland, if you don’t take the time to add the finishing touches.   Remember, accessories can include shoes.  If you are not a fan of the brighter bolder colors for a dress, you are in luck because there are just as many hot shoe options in beautiful colors.  If you feel more comfortable in a LBD pair it with a great fun colored pair of shoes and necklace.

3.  Wear appropriate undergarments.  There is nothing in the world worse than a women dressed to the nines and then seeing her exposed undergarments.  Many of you have heard me say this before but the undergarments can make or break an outfit.  Undergarments are the foundation for all of your outfits.

If you are thinking that you still have no clue what you will wear to your holiday functions, call me and let’s set up a time to get you all prepared.  We can either put together a fabulous ensemble from your exciting items, or we can go shopping to pick out the perfect thing.

What’s My Shape??

This Month’s Shape is the Hour Glass

Over the last 9 months I have shared with you tips on different body shapes.  This month I will talk about the last body shape, the hour glass. If you have missed any, please feel free to see previous newsletters at www.suchsavvystyle.com.  I will discuss the characterizations of the body shape, what looks amazing and what should be avoided.  There are six body types–Hour Glass, Rectangle, Contoured Rectangle, Triangle, Inverted Triangle and the Oval.

If you are an hour glass, lucky you!!
Body Shapes
* The Hour Glass is the first shape.
If you are an hour glass, your shoulder or bust will be the same width as your hips.  Your waist will be about ten inches smaller than the width of your bust and hips.  The hour glass is the what we visualize as the ideal women’s body shape with a larger bust, a tiny waist and shapely hips.  However, even with this shape there can be challenges.  Because your waist is so tiny you really want to accentuate that feature.  So wearing a top that is more of a gunny sack or really drapey through the waist will hang straight from the bust and add ten pounds to your mid-section.  This may be a bit of a challenge this season as many of the tops are very flowy through the mid-section.  You should wear silhouettes that are fitted and you will look great in belts.  Show off your curves with waisted dresses. Another challenge is that often times as you age, your hour glass shape can change from that of an hour glass to more of a contoured rectangle.  This is what happened to me.  Imagine having a body that was fairly easy to dress and then having a body that changed into something much more difficult. This shape really is the one that changes the most as we age because women tend to gain weight in the waist.  Remember, if this has happened to you it’s ok to still show off your waist.  You just need to do it differently than you did before.   Stay away from belts unless you wear them under jackets.  Instead of wearing fitted clothing, try a more semi-fitted look.  (Also, see my segment about dressing for the contoured rectangle.)

If you still have questions about your body shape and what will look best on you call for a body style analysis or wardrobe evaluation appointment.

Just what is

my Style??

Are you one of those people who has many clothing items in your closet and none of them seem to mix well together.  If you find yourself in this prediciment there is a strong possibility you don’t have a sense of your own personal style.  One of the first things I do when  I meet a new client is discuss their style, or help them figure it out if they don’t think they have one.  Knowing your personal style is key.

When you know your style you will not only be able to make wise decisions when you are shopping, but you will also have a closet full of clothes that all work together in many different outfits.  So often I am working in someone’s closet and say to them "this doesn’t even look like you or your style!"  If you only buy clothing you think is cute, without thinking whether it is fitting to you and your personality, you could find yourself with a closet full of clothes but you may feel like you have nothing to wear.  Here are a few tips to help you figure out your own personal style.

1.  Think about who you are.  Do you like to make a statement with your clothing or do you prefer to blend in?  Are you fun and bubbly or more even toned?

2.  Think about things you like.  Are you drawn to a more frilly romantic style, a conservative and traditional style, a sporty look, or maybe you are creative and artistic.  Do you like the contrast and the drama of black and white or the elegance of Channel?  Maybe you like a more alluring sexy look.  Often times people will feel a connection to a few of these styles.

If you can narrow down what you really like, you will not only save yourself a ton of money when you are shopping but you will also have clothing that all goes together.  An example would be someone who has a closet full of very dramatic items and then goes and makes a purchase of a flowery, flowy skirt in pastel colors.  They will have a problem finding other items to go with that skirt from their closet.  Not to mention, that if they are a bit of a dramatic person they will look and most likely feel out of place and uncomfortable in this very romantic skirt.

If you do not know your personal style, let me help you save money and time by figuring it out.
Don’t forget about
Holiday Gift Certificates!!

If you have a friend or family member who would love to get some new outfits out of their existing wardrobe give them the gift of a personal stylist!  Maybe you have a friend who hates to shop because they have no idea what to buy.  What a gift it would be for them to have someone shop with them and have an amazing shopping experience.

Have you been thinking that you would really like to schedule an appointment  for yourself  but you just can’t spend the money?  What a great gift to ask for!

All of my services can be purchased as a gift certificate, or you can purchase a gift certificate in a valued dollar amount.  That way the receiver can choose their own service.

Please remember that not all 2011 fall fashion trends work for everyone.  Make sure that the trends you purchase this season are flattering to your shape and that you are choosing your best colors.  If you have questions about what fall trends will make you look fabulous this season please contact me.

Four Decades…Really?

Cape

So just how do you figure out all the trends from this year??  It seems they are all over the place including fashion from four decades.

Although it can be confusing, I love the versatility of this fall.  There is something for everyone.  If you don’t look good in skinny pants than you have wide leg pants as an option too.  If you hate paisley, you have many other prints to choose from.  Maybe you love polka dots or you are much more into art deco, it’s all great.  Whatever your personal style is, this season you are sure to find something that’s great for you.

Now on with some of my thoughts.  Color blocking.  First of all what is it?  Color blocking is just that, blocks of color that are placed next to one another on a garment.  This trend can either go very wrong or work like magic.  For example, if you’re bigger on top, doing horizontal color blocking will make you look larger and wider than you are.  However, a dress with vertical color blocking could make you appear taller and leaner.  When purchasing an item with color blocking think carefully about the placement of every block and remember all your rules.

A few of you have emailed or called to ask my thoughts on capes.  My answer is this, I love them but they are not the most flattering of garments on anyone.  Wear them for fun, warmth and trend but nothing more.  A tip is to wear them with slimmer silhouettes on the bottom such as a skinnier pant or a pencil skirt.  Wearing your cape with a wide skirt or pants is not recommended as you will look like a rectangle or what I call wide over wide.

And don’t forget nylons are making their comeback for those of you who have missed them (thanks to Kate & Pippa Middleton).   If nylons are not for you, tights with patterns and colors are everywhere.

With at least four decades being present this season figuring which is best for you can be a challenge.  I would recommend staying away from some of the 80’s looks as they are mainly represented by the younger teen and 20’s generation.  But many of the looks from both the 40’s and 60’s can be very figure flattering with the slimmer and A-line silhouettes.  High waist – wide leg pants represent the 70’s era.  Please be very cautious of this trend.  Although they are really, really cute it does take a very special body to pull off this look.  All you curvy girls…stay away!

For Fall 2011 think about your personality, look at the trends and your body and make your purchases with all those things in mind.  The great thing about this year is there is something for everyone!

Welcome to Such Savvy Style

Greetings!
I hope you are all enjoying your summer and vacations.  It’s hard to imagine that summer will be coming to an end soon and school for many is already back in session.  Believe it or not, early fall clothing is already starting to make it’s way into stores and I am already starting to book my fall shopping and outfit appointments.  Be on the look-out as I will be sending out the list of fall trends in the next couple of weeks!

Does your husband or significant other need a makeover?

mens suit

Lately many of you have hired me to help your husbands, boyfriends and significant others.  Oftentimes I hear from women that they are just tired of their husband either looking schleppy and arguing about it with them, or that they just don’t know what to do to help them look better.  Since I always am writing about women’s fashion and guidelines, I thought I would take the opportunity to write about some tips for men.  For those of you who don’t have a man, you might soon and trust me from my dating experience they just might need your help!

What I hear most often is “my husband has some really nice clothes but he only puts them together the way the salesperson did it”.  In other words, he has lots of ties, jackets and shirts but he doesn’t know how to mix them up.  This is something that is very common among men and something that is very fixable.   Here are the basic rules of mixing and matching prints and textures for men.

1.  When mixing prints together it’s really important to make sure you always have one solid colored item in the ensemble to ground the outfit.  For example, you can have a shirt with a stripe and a tie with a geometric print but then the jacket and or the pants need to be a solid color.  Preferably with no texture.

2.  Mixing prints works best when all the colors blend together.  A light blue solid shirt would look a amazing with a light gray pinstripe suite if you tied it all together with a tie that had silver, light blue and one or two other colors.

Another thing I hear and see pretty frequently is that men tend to look schleppy in their clothing.  Maybe you know this is a problem with your man, but you just don’t know how to fix the problem.  This can be very frustrating.  I recently went out with a man who looked this way and he informed me that he purchased his shirt at the hardware store…really?  I had no idea the hardware store even sold clothing!

1.  The quality of clothing is important.  As easy as it is for women to look dumpy, it’s just as easy for men to look schleppy.  Although you don’t need to shop out of your price range, shopping for items that are a little higher quality will make a difference in the way they look on the body.

2.  Fit is one of the biggest culprits in men looking tacky in their clothing.  Check out the following areas to see if maybe the fit is the reason the garment is not looking right.  Are the sleeves too short or too long?  Nothing looks worse than a jacket with sleeves that are an inch too long!  Are the shoulders too big, does the the body of the shirt look too boxy and gappy?   If this is the case, think about purchasing a shirt that is tailored or slim fitted.  There should only be one break on a man’s pants and it should fall over the front of the shoe.  If he is on the shorter side, I suggest staying away from pants with a cuff as they will make him appear shorter.

3.  If he is not dressing for his age, or updating his look, he may look out of place.  Make sure he is not hanging on to his youth and wearing outfits that make him look ridiculous.  Oftentimes, men say to me “what’s wrong with these jeans?  They are still in good condition and I don’t want to pay for something new when these look fine!”  Maybe they are in decent shape but if they are outdated, or inappropriate for his age, then it’s time to make a new purchase.

If you are still stuck and need help making your significant other up his look and look as fabulous as you do, let’s set up an appointment to work in his closet.

What’s My Shape??

This Month’s Shape is the Oval

For the last few months I have been writing about different body shapes.  This month I will talk about the oval.  I will discuss the characterizations of that body shape, what looks amazing and what should be avoided.   There are six body types–Hour Glass, Rectangle, Contoured Rectangle, Triangle, Inverted Triangle and the Oval.

If you are an oval you carry most of your weight in your mid section.  Your stomach is the widest part of your body.  Look at your body, is the widest part of your mid-section wider than your bust or your hips?  Or, does your abdomen sit out past your bust line in front?
Body Shapes
* The oval is the 4th from your left.
The goal to dressing this body type is take the focus off the mid section and highlight your face and great legs.  Ovals look amazing in draping fabrics that are not clingy through the mid-section.  A soft boxier cut jacket that flows through the mid-section or has a slight flare over your torso will be your best jacket.  Swing jackets and dresses that graze over your stomach area will draw attention away from that area.  Keep straighter skirts to knee length and show off your legs.  Layering a jacket and dressing in a column of solid color underneath will be an extremely flattering look for you.

One thing you want to avoid if your body shape is an oval is any top or blouse that creates a horizontal line across the middle of your torso.  A horizontal line will be sure to create width in the exact spot you want to avoid creating width.  Your tops should always cover your entire waist area and extend all the way to your hips.  Two other big no no’s are tucking your tops into your pants and wearing pants with pleats.  Although skinny jeans and leggings are the rage, this will not be your best look as it will extenuate your middle because your legs will look so thin.  By drawing attention to your face, neckline, bust and legs you will take the attention away from your waistline.

If you still have questions about your body shape and what will look best on you call for a body style analysis or wardrobe evaluation appointment.

Is your teen or tween driving you crazy??

teenfashion 2011
If you have a tween or teen girl, chances are you are ready to scream just at the thought of back to school shopping.  What’s cool, verses what’s acceptable is always the question.  Below are a list of stylish must haves for this fall.

1.  Every young women needs fun accessories.  Accessories can actually save you money because new accessories can make old outfits fresh, new and hot.  Places such as H&M, and Forever 21 have great little finds  for very inexpensive.  Think scarves, bangles, belts, and long necklaces.

2.  Every girl loves shoes.  Whether your teens style is more of a princess or hipster there are plenty of options out there.  Funky canvas converse, ballet flats, wedges, ankle booties or tall boots are all great options.

3.  Once again the jegging is making a huge appearance.  Although you may feel your daughter doesn’t look her best in the fitted look, they are the rage and they will want to wear them.  With that said, just remember the rules.  If they have a tummy or carry their weight in the thighs or hips suggest a looser longer top that covers up that area.  They will also look slimmer if they wear more of a slim line shoe like a ballet flat opposed to a chunky tennis shoe or Ugg type boot.

4.  The 80’s are back in full swing.  You will see bright neon, and many off the shoulder looks.  Think of the movie Foot Loose!

Even though some of these trends may give you the shakes, try thinking back to the things you used to wear.  Yikes, that’s scary!   Although shopping with your teen can be a challenge, remember it should be fun!   If you need help, let me know.  I offer a discounted rate for my teen back to school shopping.
